What is SEO? Search Engine Optimization

SEO is the term used for the efforts done on a website for it to rank on a search engine when a relevant keyword is searched by the user of the search engine. SEO's full form stands for Search Engine Optimization. SEO does not mean, only putting the effort to rank your website on a search engine, it also means getting more quality and quantity traffic. Now let's understand the core of seo.

What is SEO ( Search Engine Optimization )?

SEO consists of all the activities done to drive quality traffic to a website to rank higher in the search result of the relevant searched keyword organically. Now, as a digital marketer, SEO can be considered as the study of search engines, perhaps figuring out how the algorithm of the search engines works, only after that is the marketer plans the SEO strategy, that how the SEO campaign should run in the most effective and efficient way and the best part is Search Engines never reveals the working of their algorithms since it would pile up a lot of spamming and will also rattle the very businesses of that particular search engine. Google has clearly stated to keep the algorithms secret. Before going towards understanding SEO, let's understand

What is SERP

SERP stands for Search Engine Result Page, which means the first page which appears on the search engine, when the user makes a search, depending upon the search, a typical SERP may contain paid and organic links, maps, business listings, related search links relevant to the user's original search.

Normally a SERP contains these 4 things

- Paid Ads

- Organic Search Results

- Business Listings

- Related Searches

How Search Engines works.

Since, we've already learned what is SEO or atleast have an idea of what seo is, let's jump up to how seo word. Now, when we search something on the search engine, let's say Google, now when you make a search, Google has a bot in their system which crawls the web to find the most relevant search result for the user, understand it this way, a bot is like a librarian who fetches out the best books of your interests. here librarian is the bot, your interests are your searched term and books are the result of your search.

Now when you search something on the search engine, the bot searches for the best result from the billions of its index pages. Now how the bot decides that what is the best result?.

Not this depends upon various following factors such as,

Site structure

In order to be the best-structured site, the site has to have a great user experience, which depends upon the type of colours used, fonts, and content used in the site to attract users, placing links, buttons etc on the places where expected are all factors of a well-structured website and search engines also collects information from users to rank a website.

Page and domain authority

As the name says the authority is self-explanatory. A search engine trusts a page/website depending upon the number of links attached to that particular page/website, these links are links, linking an external webpage/website which is called backlinks. This show the trustworthiness of the website/webpage.

Relevance

Relevance is a minor but important factor in ranking a website, As you search a keyword on a search engine like "Digital Marketing", now the search engine is gonna find the most closely-related-ideas, which a search engine decides by checking the most closely related pages to the searched phrase aka the keyword, and the relevancy is also dependent upon the two of the above-discussed factors.

So this is the basic understanding of how a search engine works, please let me know if you need a detailed blog on how a search engine works in the comments.

How SEO works?

SEO is closely related to how a search engine works since all the ranking factors depends upon the above-discussed factors ie. Relevance, Site Structure and Authority, Basics says that a search engine could have thousands of ranking factors, not only it sounds shocking but the worst is that search engines never reveal these algorithms, due to business competition and avoiding spam, but after a deep study of practising SEOs, some ranking factors have been discovered by SEO practising personnel by hit and miss. These factors are hard to categorise and even some have recently been even given a name since there was no terminology for them before, So these factors are not all the ranking factors and neither guarantees you ranking, even if strictly followed, So these are

Why is SEO important?

Search Engine Optimization is important since, it comes with the added advantage of digital marketing, where surfing through search engines is free and almost every individual on earth is on the internet currently, and getting SEO done on websites opens wide floodgates for a huge potential of traffic falling on the website and all in all, it all about getting recognized on the internet ecosystem and maybe showcasing some dominance over the internet.

Now let's understand this through a story. Robert is the owner of  "The Book Spot" bookstore. Now even after spending a fortune on advertising like printing banners, flyers distribution, renting billboard spaces all over the city, etc, Robert is still struggling to keep his book business afloat, Now, Robert came across the concept of digital marketing through his 20-year-old son, where he found the potential of business over the internet is endless, Now the first step that Robert took in order to take his business online was to get a website/online bookstore. But, after that, the problem he came across was that he was still not getting and good business still since there are almost a million more similar online bookstores are present on the internet, now to get the recognition which his business needed, Robert came across the process of search engine optimization, where according to his research he found ou only 2% of search engine users ever goes to page 2 of the SERP and only 40% of users even considers results below 5th result.

So, now Robert realized that it is the competition of being the top3 otherwise the effort is not worth it at all, now this shows the importance of SEO, to have the recognition and the authority over the search engine.
